The Frælis

The Frælis, like all other Superior Species, are a race believed to be formed of pure atrón. Like the Nés, information about them is scarce.

It is said that the Frælis were created by the Syners. Some religious sources claim that the Nés played a role in their creation as well, while other sources postulate that the Nés were against the creation of the Frælis. The common belief, though, is that the Frælis are unquestionably the offspring of the Superior Species.

The etymological origin of the word Frælis comes from the ancient Novosna language and it means “bad child” or “naughty child.” In time the word for so highly integrated with the race that the Senon language family, a successor of the Novosna language, did not even include it. The Senon family is the basis of the modern languages of the Pyrokans and the Asnai.

The religious understandings of the reasons behind the creation of this race vary slightly. Beyond the Reality believers claim that the Frælis were created by the Syners as an instrument to cultivate life on the continent, a way to introduce a diversity of species. Upon establishing contact with the humans, the Frælis somehow “got corrupted” and “embraced the darkness”.

The other Superior Species religions state that, instead of merely enriching life, the Frælis were a reflection of the love the Syners had towards the humans. The Frælis were designed as defenders of mankind but had been “corrupted” by the very humans that they were supposed to protect.

All religious sources claim that the Frælis attempted to control mankind and gain their worship without permission from their original creators. The humans devoted themselves to the Frælis willingly which gave the Frælis the opportunity to manipulate the atrón energy, which was dormant inside the human minds. In other words, the Frælis had positioned themselves to become the commanders of the potentially vast resources of atrón energy that the humans possessed.

A war broke out as the Syners attempted to stop the Frælis in their endeavors. Unable to cope with their “naughty children,” the Syners asked the Nés for help. While all religious sources agree on the reasons for the war, some sources, like Beyond the Reality, claim that the Nés and the Syners had banded together against the Frælis ever since the beginning of the conflict.

In a chaotic era known as the War of the Seven Storms, the natural habitat of the Syners, the Es'eni Valley, was destroyed becoming what is known today as Red Dune. Later the Syners migrated to the Eastern Sorién and created their new homeland. This is how the area came to be known as the Es'ai Valley.

Some believe that the Frælis were destroyed during the War of the Seven Storms. However, other smaller religious fractions claim that the Frælis could not be destroyed in a single attack but rather were continuously assaulted by the Superior Species. Unable to defeat them the Syners created the Red Dune as a prison to contain the Frælis, not merely as a place for them to live as all the major religious movements believe.

Whether the Frælis ever existed, or if they still do today is not exactly known. No research can be carried out as the Red Dune is highly unsuitable for humans and no expedition to the area has ever returned. Faced with the wrath of countless savage creatures that dwell in the Red Dune, as well as the never ending dust storms, reaching estimated speeds of over sixty miles an hour, few dare to undertake the perilous journey.
